Our Horses:
We raise, train and show pure Percheron horses... "gentle giants''. They originate from a small provence in France : La Perche. At one time, these wonderful, gentle horses were used as great War Horses, carrying French Knights into battle. The breed had to have easy going temperments, high intelligence and a love of being in a partnership with their owners. The Percheron horse had to be wide enough for a knight with all of his armour and strong enough to carry him into battle. Thus the Percheron horse was bigger than most horses of his time and still is.
Eventually the Percheron was used in fields, plowing great clods of earth, only to be replaced by the tractor. Soon, there were only few Percheron horses left; no one wanted to use the horse any longer. Why- when a tractor would do twice the work ? A few gentlemen in the United States saw a need to keep the breed alive and began breeding them again in the 1940's. A breed registry was begun and purebred horses were registered as the Percheron Horse of America. Soon people realised how wonderful these horses were and began using them to plow their fields again...this time in a much smaller area. Loggers realised the importance of a team of high powered draft horses when dragging downed trees from one area to another....the horses did not destroy the forests as the huge machines did. They just left paths and well, manure !
The Percheron Horse of today will weigh between 1500 and 2400 pounds. This mighty breed of horse can stand as tall as 19 hands!! Most average Percherons will be from 16-18 hands in height.
Their personalities are delightful and many people are discovering how much fun it is to ride these " Gentle Giants". They are intelligent, kind, and most times love to have a 'job' to do with their humans. These giant horse are also VERY sensitive to being mistreated.Because they Are so huge, most people don't treat them with the kindness and understanding they require, thus creating a frightened animal capeable of being quite dangerous. All they ask for is respect, kind handling, good care and love. You will get it returned 100 fold.....
Even Carlene, our 'token Clydesdale mare' is like this !
